🌀The Latest
Everyone did a great job at the IBJJF DC Open last week. Kogaion brought four competitors this time, who took home one gold, one silver, and two bronze medals. Most importantly, we’re proud of the courage of our first-time competitors. Even though all of the results were not what we wanted, we’ll use these moments to grow. We were also pleased to be in the company of much support from our non-competing members. Thank you for giving us your time and energy.
🗓 Upcoming
Our next tournament to work towards will be Grappling Industries Maryland on September 21. To our students who have yet to make their debut - these competitions are opportunities to test your mind and body. Competing is a fine balance of managing your preparation, emotions, and performance.
👀 Wolf Watch
This edition’s wolf-to-watch features Johnny, who has been practicing BJJ since 2015.
Why you started: I wanted to be confident in defending myself and others. There’s a lot of crazy people out there; BJJ was a natural fit with my wrestling background.
What you love most about BJJ: There’s so much to love about BJJ, especially at Kogaion. The camaraderie and community are world-class. Everyone in the BJJ community knows the ritual: bump, slap, and roll. In my opinion, there’s only a few opportunities to become this closely acquainted to another person. Another favorite hobby of mine is spotting other practitioners in the wild (Ears are one of the first things I notice on people since starting BJJ 👀 ). I also love the self-reflection and mental fortitude that BJJ provides. Your first week at an academy is a humbling experience, but if you keep the right mindset, you’ll achieve so much and progress quickly. For me, BJJ builds a resilient mind and allows me to flow, pivot, or take control of a situation.
Favorite position/guard/submission: Flying Elbow! Just kidding. I’m a big fan of the kimura trap.

That’s all for now. Happy hunting. 🐺
